Of Movie Quotes & Social Media…
For those who don’t know me, I am a huge movie fan… not a buff like Keith Hernandez and the Civil War (obscure Seinfeld reference) but a big fan nonetheless. My good friend Mark and I are constantly quoting movie lines to and fro, think it’s a guy thing…
Anywho, a while back the American Film Institute released their list of the Top 100 Movie Quotes of all time. And me being me, severely over-caffeinated and somewhat demented yet all the while well meaning, decided it was time to take some of these quotes and apply them to the Social Media crazy world we find ourselves in…
So here goes… oh and “Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.”
“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
Social Media Translation: My response to anyone who tells me how many Twitter followers they have.
“I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse.”
SMT: Another Social Media Snake Oil salesman promising X number of followers in X number of days.
“What we’ve got here is (a) failure to communicate.”
SMT: I am not receiving your DMs so clearly the world must be ending.
“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”
SMT: I swear I meant to Re-Tweet you, I swear! I love your Tweets!
“Made it, Ma! Top of the world!”
SMT: Things Ashton Kutcher would say
“You can’t handle the truth!”
SMT: No one really gives a damn what you have to say on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, the bathroom wall, a post it note… they don’t care!
“Round up the usual suspects.”
SMT: Client’s mandate to set up a Twitter, Facebook & LinkedIn account
“Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.”
SMT: You made it to 1,000 Twitter followers
“If you build it, he will come.”
SMT: Ok, I’ve set up a blog, Twitter & Facebook… where is everybody?
“Say ‘hello’ to my little friend!”
SMT: You tell someone of your Twitter account that only has 5 followers
“I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.”
SMT: My Twitter plan is to get complete strangers to ReTweet all of my Tweets.
“I feel the need—the need for speed!”
SMT: I am now going to send a message from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace and YouTube ALL at the same time…
Ok, that was just a random sampling… there are plenty of other quotes from the AFI list I didn’t include. Check out the list, find your favorite and translate into Social Media speak for the rest of us.. or if your favorite movie quote isn’t on the list, tell us what it is and tell us how it relates to Social Media.

Son, your mouth is writing checks your body can’t cash.
What you’d say to brands that advertise product benefits that are false or only true under certain conditions.
I used “gotta watch The Blind Side” for a whole post on marketing and social media. But since you’ve got some funny going on here, I’ll add these (don’t know if they’re both on the AFI list, loves those BTW):
“You can’t fight in here, this is the war room.”
SMT: if you’re gonna go round about and fight, take it to a DM.
“The first rule of fight club, you don’t talk about fight club.”
SMT: My response when all we do is talk, blog and tweet SM. I’m guilty myself, working on it.
Wow, fun.. I could do this a while.. maybe have to reblog your idea
@TomMartin “That’s a negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.”
@Davina Love your quotes and Social Media Translations… hysterical! And be sure to let me know if you do re-blog the idea… would love to read it!
Not a movie quote, a Yogi Berra quote: “We’re lost but we’re making good time.” When I’ve spent a couple of hours reading e-mail, checking Twitter and LinkedIn, RSS feeds, etc., and I feel like I’ve taken in huge amounts of information but can’t quite pinpoint what, exactly, the result is.
Another Yogi-ism, “When you see a fork in the road, take it,” seems made for describing hyperlinks, except he said it before the Web existed.
“You told Harpo to beat me.”
Newman (from Seinfeld): Because the mail never stops…
SMT: New twitter DM’s never stop coming in..
I remember a popular quote from the 80″s movie “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension”:
“Remember,no matter where you go, there you are.”
A perfect approach to social media. Be present to the audiences of each site or tool that you use (Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, etc.).
